A holiday cottage that sleeps 2 guests in 1 bedroom

We know you will be delighted when you arrive at Close Taggart. These two gold award holiday cottages, Thie Rhennie ("House of Ferns") and Thie Lough ("House of the Lake") can be found well off the beaten track, deep in the countryside, about two miles from the nearest small supermarket, bus routes and village, and six from the nearest town (Ramsey).

Thie Rhennie has one bedroom and provides the perfect setting for a special break for two.

The owners live on site and will be on hand to greet you and provide any assistance you require, you will have total freedom to enjoy the extensive grounds of Close Taggart which includes a tree house and viewing platform high up in the trees, where you can sit and enjoy a complementary glass of wine. In addition, a further viewing platform provides fabulous views of the setting sun to the west. There is also a summerhouse for guests to use.

The holiday cottages are a great base for nature lovers. The Curraghs where the cottages are located, is an area of wetland and a rich haven of biodiversity with rare flora and fauna. Wild wallabies, normally found in warmer climes, are also thriving here. The animals, native to Australia and Tasmania, have been flourishing ever since a pair escaped in the 1970s from the Curraghs wildlife park, a short distance from the cottages. Researchers believe now there are more than a 100 living in the wild. It is possible to see wallabies living in the wild on one of the short walks from the cottages.

We are very willing to assist with mobility issues, but unfortunately we are unable to accommodate full time wheel chair users due to the layout of the cottage. You can park close to the entrance, with a gravel/grassed area and cobblestones leading to two small entrance steps. Inside the cottage the kitchen and lounge are on the ground floor with normal width stairs leading to the bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.

An Easter break
We have enjoyed staying at Close Taggart on many previous occasions, and it's always a pleasure to return. After a warm welcome from Shirley and John, we quickly settled in to the cottage. It's warm and cosy, quiet, and very fully equipped with everything you could need. Looking forward to our next visit!¹

A return to Close Taggart
This was our fourth visit to Close Taggart, and once again we received a warm welcome from John and Shirley. It was a real pleasure to be back; it's an idyllic, peaceful location, perfect for a quiet relaxed holiday. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable, and well appointed, with lots of little wecoming touches - the wine and chocolates were much appreciated! We also enjoyed in the evenings strolling through the beautiful gardens that surround the cottage. We're already looking forward to our next visit!

Relaxing stay
Excellent, friendly, warm welcome from John and Shirley - ferry was over an hour late and they were both there to welcome us. House was warm and cosy and a welcome basket of goodies and some essential provisions in the fridge, lovely touches. There was high winds on the Sunday evening and both John and Shirley were up early the next morning to remove a branch that was blocking the road to enable us to get our vehicle out to catch the the early ferry - can't thank them enough. Lovely, lovely people. Will definitely stay there again.

Above and beyond
This was a beautiful property and we couldn't have hoped for a better location. Absolute silence apart from the breeze and birdsong. The cottage was lovely ... comfortable, cosy and clean. Shirley and John had provided so many unexpected little extras ... wine, biscuits, cuddly cat to take home, plus a few edible essentials. Very comfortable bed. The gardens were something else! As well as having our own small private garden, we were encouraged to have free access to the extensive gardens, where we found a wonderful tree house complete with wine and glasses. There were many seats, swings and platforms where we could sit with views of the hills. Shirley and John had developed a large number of walking leaflets which were very good as the cottages are located in an area with much interesting wildlife (including wallabies!) Couldn't have hoped for a better place to stay!

Great quiet place for a relaxing holiday
Tucked away in the north of the island this is a lovely place to stay if you want somewhere peaceful whilst (provided you have a car) not far from lots of IoM attractions. Communication in advance of our stay was excellent, as was the warm welcome from Shirley and John, who were discreet hosts but very helpful if we had a query. A comfy lounge, a well appointed and equipped kitchen (I swear everything you could need had been thought of and provided), a good sized bedroom (personally the bed gave me a touch of backache, but that's my back, not a comment on how comfortable the bed was), and a bathroom with a lovely bath (and lots of hot water). It was necessary to leave a small light on in the bathroom and the door mostly closed to ensure there was no tripping down or up the step across the stairs in the night when moving from the bedroom to bathroom (sign of old age having during the night loo trips!). Also the property downstairs is a little dark even on a bright day, so had to put the lights on more than we are used to. On the plus side, we much appreciated all the lovely welcome touches, including a big bowl of fresh fruit, milk, etc. There was even a toy Manx cat to keep as a souvenir. There are lots of walks locally (many of which are not difficult or lengthy) in the local wetlands area and reserves. Also many glens, beaches, bays etc, where the wildlife is abundant, as well as heritage sites, steam trains and trams to enjoy. We met quite a few people from the island over our two week stay; everyone was friendly and helpful. There was too much to see on the beautiful Isle of Man in just two weeks, so we shall return to the island and to this property.

Home from Home
A warm welcome awaited us from the owners John and Shirley, they were fantastic as we were later in arriving - the cottage was nice, warm, cosy and welcome surprises. We were over for a specific event, however there was lots of information on things to do in the welcome pack. I would of loved to wander around the garden but it was too dark by the time we got back in the evening. We would definitely recommend this cottage. Loved the location as it was out of town and remote, perfect, We will definitely be back.

Such a peaceful amazing cottage and hosts
We had an amazing time here in the cosy little cottage, tucked away in a lovely peaceful area of the north of the island. A very memorable stay, with deep healing of the heart, mind and soul. John and Shirley are and were wonderful hosts, and everything you could possible ever need was there ( or tucked away neatly in a draw or cupboard). The cottage was super cosy and very relaxing. The gardens and grounds were very welcoming for walks and getting back in touch with nature ( with beautiful trees, flowers and perfectly mowed lawns ). Will always remain a special place in our hearts; and we will definitely be back again soon. Really sad to leave: and we could happily spend the rest of our lives there perfectly content. Thank you John and Shirley. Love, Rob and Melissa

Fantastic stay in a hidden gem of a property
My stay here was very enjoyable indeed, on arrival shirley and john give me a very warm welcome. The cottage is old fashioned and quint so this was just perfect for me, it even had a Po under the bed lol, which I didn't use incase you are wondering. Shirley and john provided groceries in the fridge, along with a fresh basket of fruit and a bottle of red wine, all of which was gratefully welcomed. When I headed upstairs there was also a box of after eight left on my bed, along with a little kitten called manxie to take back to ireland, he has grown a lot. I then took myself for a walk round their garden, you will be very surprised to see all the different things you come across, throw a stick for their pet sheep she loves that. What I loved most was the tree swing, and pictures of johns family in the study room add character to the cottage. Shirley and john kindly offered to take me to the local shop as I had no car, which is essential due to it's remote location. They kindly took me for a wee drive, showing me places to visit and were they do their daily walks, they are both very fit john once wrestled a bear, brave bear i say lol. My favourite part was when we stopped of at the shore to watch the big waves, it was beautiful. Upon leaving the cottage I realized I left my coat behind, john very kindly offered to meet me and return it, all these wee touches just made for an amazing stay.x

Away from it all
We needed a break away from everything and this was perfect. Beautiful place to stay with plenty of walks nearby. We could chill and do nothing but listen to the birds and enjoy the “special spaces” Loved the little welcome pieces that John and Shirley scattered around. Close Taggart is a special place and we will be back.

We loved it
A very comfortable and quiet oasis, ideally situated for exploring the Curragh and all over the north of the island. With perfect hosts on hand for advice but otherwise rarely glimpsed and a lovely garden to relax in. Even fresh herbs to pick.

The cottage has everything that you could need and there is so much attention to detail. Lots of lovely personal touches. The gardens are extensive and well maintained with a variety of features. And the hosts could not have been more welcoming.
