"Great historical hotel, beautiful place, really enjoyed staying there. Great location, so close to lots of trails, amazing park. What I did not like much: quality and variety of meals at the restaurant was not great. The remains of Soda Springs, one of 49 mineral spring that attracted visitors to this area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The springs were developed by the Longmire family, who first settled the area in 1883 after building a wagon trail from Ashford, 13 miles (21 km) away. In addition to improving the springs, the Longmires constructed a series of cabins, tents, a 5-room hotel, and hiking trails to Paradise. By 1915 the Longmires and the National Park were no longer seeing eye-to-eye, and the Longmires leased the property to a hotelier, who improved and continued to operate the springs until the National Park Service purchased the property in 1939. It's an easy walk, and there's a nice view of Mount Rainier from the meadows.
