"Hotel was 'tired'. Desk not staffed after hours and only access was via a rear door left unlocked on a 'snip' that other guests closed on one occasion, locking me out! The intercom to reach the out of hours porter was behind a half closed shutter which I had to crawl under to reach the intercom. Even then, the staff answered but didn't come to open the door. The power was out on the rainy day we visited this fantastic chateau, which just added to the atmosphere. As we waited outside in the rain a lovely old man came to chat to us (in French). He turned out to be the owner, a descendant of the powerful counts who used its crucial position on the Lot River to protect their interests.
