April 2012
Bhongir fort
Bhongir or Bhuvanagiri fort is located ca. 50 km east from Hyderabad. Built in 12th century by local ruler Tribhuvanamahalla (hence the name Bhuvanagiri) Vikramaditya s on a vast egg-shaped monolithic rock rising 150 metres above terrain. Fortified by nature (shape of the rock) and by men (moats, walls, gates at the foot) it was almost unbreakable. Bala Hisar pavilon on top was built by Qutbshahi rulers of Golkonda kingdom (Hyderabad) in 17th century and it gives truly birdview perspective of the surrounding land and Bhongir town bellow. Beware to go up the rock soon after sunrise or before sunset as the stone gets hot during the day making the hike much more demanding.
